The second most populous state (after California) and the second largest state in the United States is the largest state in the continental United States. Geographically located in the south of the center of the country. Texas is the southernmost border of Mexico with Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas states; New Mexico in the west, Oklahoma in the north, Arkansas in the north, and Louisiana in the east. Texas has a population of 268,820 square miles (696,200 square kilometers) and an ever-increasing population of 26.4 million (June 2013).
Houston is Texas's fourth largest city in the United States, San Antonio is the second largest in the state and the seventh largest in the United States. Dallas-Fort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and fifth largest US metropolitan areas, respectively. Other major cities were El Paso and the state capitol Austin. Texas was formerly an independent republic and reminded me of the struggle for independence from Mexico, with the nickname "Lone Star State" meaning only the star state. "Star Alone" is today on the Texas state flag and on the Texas state seal.
