It is one of the states in the US Midwest region. The Michigan name is adapted from the native American tongue by the French, who are the first settlers of the michigan-killing region, which means "big water" or "big lake" in the Ojibwe language. Michigan is the 8th largest state of the United States in terms of population. It is also famous for its large lakes named Great Lakes. It is the largest state in the world with coasts of fresh waters.

The major cities are Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Ann Arbor. The president is Lansing. The capital city of Lansing is Michigan's largest and most popular city, Detroit. This city is also number one in America's automotive sector. Known as the Great Lakes, and besides the resources of Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario lakes, the state of Michigan, which also hosts Lake Saint Clair, boasts the world's longest freshwater shoreline.

The state is the only province with only two peninsulas. Michigan Lower Peninsula (Lower Peninsula of Michigan) is the official landing site for Michigan. The Upper Peninsula is called "Yoopers" by the Americans and has great economic importance in terms of tourism and natural resources.
